Anonymous Attacks on U.S. Department of Justice

Image
In what was billed as "Monday Mail Mayhem," the hacktivist group Anonymous released a 1.7-GB archive that it's characterizing as "data that used to belong to the United States Bureau of Justice, until now." "Within the booty you may find lots of shiny things such as internal emails, and the entire database dump," according to a statement released by the group. "We Lulzed as they took the website down after being owned, clearly showing they were scared of what inevitably happened." That statement was included with a BitTorrent file (named 1.7GB_leaked_from_the_Bureau_of_Justice) uploaded Monday to the Pirate Bay by "AnonymousLeaks," although multiple downloaders Tuesday complained that the Torrent download was stuck at the 94%-completion point. Why "dox"--release purloined data from--the  Bureau of Justice Statistics ? "We are releasing data to spread information, to allow the people to be heard, and to know t...

70,000  Project !deas, yet to be published  Leaked A software bug on crowd-funding website Kickstarter.com exposed more than 70,000 project ideas that weren't supposed to be made public, according to a published report. "The bug made accessible the project description, goal, duration, rewards, video, image, location, category, and user name for unlaunched projects," Strickler wrote. "No account or financial data was made accessible." The epis...

Government Action against Hacking Bangladesh Websites

Image
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in Bangladesh says it has traced an Indian IP (Internet Protocol) address used for hacking 20 district portals, but acknowledges that the real identity of the hacker could be concealed.  The hacked sites were operated by the PMO and the incident is considered to be a serious security lapse.  "We have initially detected an Indian IP address that belongs to Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), one of the largest Internet service providers in India," said SM Akash, media manager of Access to Information (A2i) team of the PMO.  Professional hackers, however, use various methods to hide their real IP address and location, The Daily Star quoted him as saying.  The Bangladesh government will ask VSNL for details of the IP address and the hacker's location, said the official.  Twenty district websites operated by the PMO were hacked on Saturday.  Some Hindi letters and ‘JAI HIND!’ were posted on the hacked websites.  The...

3 Bangalore Techies Arrested For Hacking IGIA

Image
In this wired era, hell hath no fury like techies scorned. The Indira Gandhi Inter-national Airport (IGIA) found it out the hard way on June 29 when its advanced passenger check-in services were crippled and flights delayed. Denied higher wages, three software engineers in Bangalore including a woman used logic bombing, a cyber attack technique, to disable the Common Use Passengers Processing System (CUPPS) they had helped install at Terminal 3 of the IGIA. The three have now landed in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) net. A CBI official who did not want to be named said the agency’s sleuths from Bangalore and Delhi had raided the houses of the techies in Bangalore and arrested them on November 16. The official, however, did not disclose the names of the accused and the IT firm/firms they are (or were) associated with. The three were taken to the CBI office in Delhi and later released on conditional bail after furnishing personal bonds. According to the offici...
