Windows Feedback Program - Microsoft With Windows 8 getting ever closer to its release date, Microsoft today  announced  that it is looking for volunteers to join its  invite-only feedback program  for active Windows 7 and Windows 8 Consumer Preview users in the U.S. In return for providing feedback to Microsoft – both by sending the company data or by filling out surveys – participants who stay in the program for more than four months will be eligible for “free software and Xbox games such as Microsoft Office 2012, Kinect Disneyland, and Forza Motorsport 4.” In the announcement today, Microsoft communications manager Brandon LeBlanc stresses that this is not meant to be a way to submit bug reports. Instead, the idea here is to help Microsoft “build better software by getting a broader understanding of your perceptions and experiences with our products.” It’s somewhat odd that Microsoft would choose this time to highlight this program. The Windows Feed...

Power of Linux

POWER OF LINUX(1)   This part of the  guide shows you how to scan for infected files by booting into SystemRescueCD and running ClamAV , a virus checker. SystemRescueCD constitutes a Swiss army knife of Linux based tools for system recovery. ClamAV is one of the useful tools that it includes in a preconfigured, ready to run state. It is possible to boot from SystemRescueCD, mount a Windows partition and then scan it for virus infected files. As you don't have to boot the infected system, this approach offers some advantages over that of running a Windows-based tool. Boot into the SystemRescueCD desktop in the normal way by accepting the default options and then typing “wizard” when prompted. Once you're at the desktop, open a command line terminal. The first thing to do is to start the ClamVA demon b...

Facebook Messenger for Windows

Image
Facebook Messenger After three months of testing,   Facebook Messenger   is coming to a Windows desktop near you. The social network on Monday announced that Messenger for Windows, a standalone app that lets you IM friends via Windows 7, will be coming out of beta in a few weeks. “Millions of people log into Facebook every day to keep up with friends. They also browse other websites and run computer programs, so it’s easy to miss important stuff,” reads a post on Facebook’s blog. “Maybe a cousin just posted about getting a new job, or a best friend wants to chat about dinner plans for tonight. You should be able to stay in touch anytime, no matter what you’re doing.” Of course, you could do the same thing if you left Facebook open on your browser all day, but this is a way to keep in touch even if you close out of Facebook. The desktop sequel to Messenger has been a long time coming. Facebook   introduced   the Android and iOS-based mobile Messenger app last Augus...

Don’t believe me? Well, allow me to try and change your mind. Have a look at some reasons why Windows Phone 7 is better than Android . Streamlined User Interface Android’s are different depending on the SKU of the handset. In other words, the UI you’ll be dealing with when using, say, a Motorola handset, will be radically different than one from Samsung or HTC . The ambiguity can be disconcerting. Windows Media Bug, A new Target for Malwares

Image
Windows Media Player Bug Security researchers have seen attackers going after the newly patched CVE-2012-0003 vulnerability in the Windows Media Player. The flaw, which was patched earlier this month by Microsoft, is a critical one that can enable remote code execution, and it affects a wide range of Windows systems. When the patch was released, Microsoft officials recommended that customers install it immediately as there was a decent chance of attackers leveraging it in the near future. And that's just what's happened. Researchers at the IBM ISS X-Force have seen malicious attacks against the MIDI vulnerability going on in the wild in recent days, and say that because exploitation of the flaw is not considered difficult, there may well be more on the horizon. "In addition to the appearance of live exploitation, detailed discussion of the vulnerability details and methods of exploitation have been seen. The relatively low complexity of locating the vulnerabilit...
